A plain page on the seam: the Architect's bright paper world on the left of a vertical line, the Ghostwriter's dark world on the right, and the text on a neutral reading column over the line.

Privacy

This page says which data this site handles when you visit it, and why. The short version: no accounts, no comments, no newsletter, and analytics only if you allow it.

Hosting

This site runs on Cloudflare. Every request your browser makes (a page, an image, a song) reaches Cloudflare's servers with what any web request carries: your IP address, the address asked for, the time, your browser's name and version, and the page you came from. Cloudflare uses this to deliver the site and to protect it from attacks.

The site's own code does not store your IP address and keeps no list of visitors.

The contact form

If you write to me through the contact form, the site stores what you send: your name, your email address, the topic you picked, your message and the time you sent it. It is kept in the site's database at Cloudflare, and a copy is sent through Cloudflare to my email inbox, which is Gmail (Google). It is there so I can read your message and answer it.

Messages older than 12 months are deleted.

The form sends nothing until you press Send, and it sets no cookie.

Storage in your browser

The site keeps a few small notes in your browser's own storage, so it works the way you left it. They stay in your browser: the site's servers never read them, and they do not identify you.

ay.hero.world (local storage): which world you were last in, the Architect's or the Ghostwriter's, so the next page opens in it.

ay.hero.intro (local storage): that the opening with the mask has played, so it does not play on every visit.

ay.lab.ll (local storage): which songs are the Architect's, so a song page can load his handwriting in time.

song-peaks: followed by a song's name (local storage): the shape of that song's waveform, measured once so it is not measured again.

ay.radio, ay.radio.q and ay.radio.open (session storage): the song that is playing, where it is, whether the sound is on, the order the songs play in on this visit and the side it opened with, so the music carries on from page to page. Gone when you close the tab.

ay.blog.y (session storage): where you were in the list of essays. Gone when you close the tab.

aguyandai-consent (a cookie, set by Cloudflare Zaraz): your answer to the analytics question, kept for a year so you are not asked on every page. Where Zaraz is not running, the same answer is kept in local storage as ay.consent. Apart from it, the site sets no cookie of its own.

Songs, images and fonts

Songs, cover art, photos and the posters of the videos all load from this site's own address (its storage at Cloudflare). The fonts are served by the site itself too. No font service, streaming service or other outside server is asked for anything while you browse and listen here; the one exception is a video you play, below.

Links to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Instagram and the other platforms are ordinary links. Those services only learn of your visit if you follow one, and then their own privacy policies apply.

Videos from YouTube

Videos play in this site's own player, in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). Until you press play on a video, nothing is loaded from YouTube: the poster you see is this site's own image.

When you press play, your browser loads YouTube's player from youtube.com and the video from youtube-nocookie.com. From then on Google (YouTube) receives your IP address and your browser's details and may store data in your browser, under Google's own privacy policy.

Analytics, only with your consent

Analytics runs only if you allow it. On your first visit a small card asks. If you say yes, Cloudflare Zaraz, a tool that runs on this site's own address, passes Google Analytics 4 what it needs to count visits: which pages are opened and for how long, the kind of device and browser, the rough region and the page you came from, and three things done here: a song started (which one), a press kit file downloaded (which one), and a message sent through the contact form (only that it was sent, nothing of what it says). Google may then store an identifier in a cookie on this site to tell visits apart, and Zaraz may keep its own small entries (their names start with _zaraz) in your browser's storage.

If you say no, nothing about your visit is sent to Google Analytics.

You can change your answer at any time: Cookie settings, here or at the bottom of every page.

What this site does not have

There is no newsletter, no user account, no sign-in and no comment section on this site, so none of that data exists here. There are no ads.

Your rights

You can ask me which of your data I hold, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to its use, and receive it in a common format (GDPR, Articles 15 to 21). Where something rests on your consent, like analytics, you can withdraw it at any time with Cookie settings; that does not change what happened before.

To ask, write to me through the contact form. You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority.
